The driver will seek his victory over poleman Gilles Magnus on a day full of races at the Aragonese track.
Mikel Azcona, current leader of the World Touring Car Cup, has to make a great comeback in order to continue leading the WTCR Championship. The Biscay native starts from eighth position on the starting grid for the Race of Spain at MotorLand Aragón, as his best lap today (02'06.227) was not among the top five in Q2. His Hyundai teammate, Norbert Michelisz, did not beat him by a single hundredth and qualified in ninth place.
Record pole position for Gilles Magnus, first on the grid for Sunday's race.
The starting line for the first race of the category is dominated by the Audi with pole for Belgian driver, Gilles Magnus (02'05.485) who has beaten the track pole record in this category, which stood at 02'05.838. Second place went to Frenchman Nathanael Berthon (02'05.680). They are followed, in third place, by Yahn Ehrlacher (2'05.808), Robert Huff (02'05.945), Yvan Muller (02'06.175), Santiago Urrutia (02'06.000) and Dániel Nagy (2'06.184). The drivers will face each other again on the track in the second race of the day four hours later.
Azcona, who celebrates his birthday today at the Aragonese circuit, comes from winning in France and Hungary and has a 10-point lead over his nearest rival, Nestor Girolami (75 points), who is followed by Santiago Urrutia with 69 points.
Without having been able to race in Germany for safety reasons, Sunday's races at MotorLand Aragón are essential for the drivers to arrive with an advantage over their rivals at the halfway point of the WTCR calendar, whose next event will be held in Portugal on July 2 and 3.
Many more races with the CER and the Regional Speed Championship
In addition to the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) in Spain, MotorLand Aragón also hosts the Spanish Endurance Championship and the Regional Speed Trophy this weekend, for two races with which the engines will not stop roaring at the circuit of Alcañiz. In fact, the Regional Speed Trophy is the one with the largest number of teams, a total of 44 (the maximum allowed on the track), as well as drivers, with 52.
In the GT (Gran Turismo) race, the pole for race 1 has been for Cor Euser with a time of 2.01.767 and for race 2 Marc Carol with 1.59.656. While in the CER José Manuel De Los Milagros (2.10.178) got the first position for race 1 and Nerea Martí (2.10.386) pole for race 2 tomorrow Sunday.
In the Regional classification, Tomás Pintos Aragonés took the lead, followed by Laurent Puitgmal and David Sánchez Andreu.
Six races will be held tomorrow on the track of Alcañiz, with two races for each championship.
The result will be 10 hours of excitement for the fans who come to MotorLand Aragón.
There is still time to buy tickets for the race day for 30 €, both on the web (https://www.motorlandaragon.com/) and at the box office. Seniors over 65 and children under 12 years old have free access throughout the weekend by presenting their ID card.
Sunday's schedule
The World Touring Car Championship races will be held at 11.15 and 15.15; the Endurance Championship races at 9.15 and 16.45; and the Regional Speed Trophy races will be held at 12.35 and 18.10.

Very welcoming event for the fans
On Friday, WTCR attendees were able to enjoy an afternoon with the drivers thanks to the pit walk organized by MotorLand Aragón, where no driver missed the event, where they signed autographs and shared anecdotes with the fans.
On the other hand, this weekend, the students of the Master of Motorsport Engineering have also been at the circuit, with on-site classes at MotorLand Aragón, where they carried out various activities, such as attending talks by representatives of the FIA and the WTCR and the drivers Mikel Azcona, Santiago Urrutia and Tiago Montero.
